A spatial instrument for collective listening.

The audience moves through a looped interior where sound, reflected light and changing compression create distinct acoustic zones.
Echo Loop was commissioned by a Copenhagen sound art biennale as a room you listen with, not just in. The installation is a continuous looped corridor, 470 square metres in total, whose width and height change along its length.
Each change of section changes the sound. Narrow passages compress the acoustic field; tall chambers open it. Twenty-four loudspeakers are embedded behind the membrane, and composers wrote works specifically for the walk — pieces that only exist as movement through the building.
Light follows the same logic: reflected, never direct, calibrated so the visitor's eyes adjust in step with their ears.

01Exterior
The loop sits inside a former shipyard hall, so its exterior is really an interior facade: a dark grey membrane that absorbs the hall's light and marks the entrance with a single warm slot.
02Interior
The walk takes roughly eighteen minutes at an unhurried pace. Visitors pass through seven acoustic zones, from a 1.9-metre compression corridor to a 7.5-metre resonant chamber at the loop's far turn.
03Light and atmosphere
All light is bounced off the floor or caught in the membrane's folds. Levels range from 5 lux in the compression corridors to 60 lux in the chambers — dim enough that hearing leads.
04Plan
A single self-intersecting loop, drawn so that no straight run exceeds nine metres. The plan was tuned iteratively with the acoustic team using path-based reverberation simulations.
05Process
The acoustic membrane is a three-layer build: structural skin, damping felt and a micro-perforated inner face. Each zone's perforation pattern was CNC-punched from the simulation data.
